A mutual investment fund is a form of collective investment in which investors' funds are pooled for further placement by professional managers into securities (or other assets) in order to generate income.
The main difference from self-investing is that even small investments are "professional". For example, by investing even the minimum contribution amount, you buy part of a portfolio in which stocks, bonds, as well as investments in gold, oil and currency are balanced.
